St Michel en L’Herm 

Gite du Moulin is located in the busy market town of St Michel en L’Herm; it's just a 5 minute drive to the coast, 15 minutes to the cathedral town of Luçon and 30 minutes to the historic port of La Rochelle.
The town has a varied selection of shops including a supermarket, 3 bar/restaurants, 2 bakeries, a butcher and a bank (with an ATM machine!).  
There is a weekly produce market to enjoy, and a busy social calendar throughout the year - you can find full details at the Tourist Information Office in the centre of town.
The historic Abbaye Royale, adjacent to the town square, is open to visitors during the summer months. 


The gite is an ideal base for dog-walking as you are just a few minutes' walk to open countryside.
It is also great for cycling, as it is an easy 15 minute bike ride into L'Aiguillon sur Mer.





The local beaches 

You are spoilt for choice with the vast array of sandy beaches on offer in southern Vendée!
The closest beach is at La Faute sur Mer, only 6kms away, where the main beach is supervised during the summer months.  There are also several dog-friendly beaches available all year round.
For the more adventurous, there is a Centre Nautique where you can experience a selection of different activities such as sand yachting, stand-up paddle & kayaking.  
At L’Aiguillon sur Mer there is a selection of water-based activities:  
- for the youngsters there is a a plan d'eau for safe bathing (supervised during the summer months) surrounded by its own beach, plus a separate area for large, floating inflatables!
- for older kids & adults there is a wakeboard park (Atlantic Wake Park) which caters for both beginners & more experienced boarders; it is open from April until November!



Other nearby activities

A short drive along the coast takes you to la Pointe d’Arçay with its Nature Reserve, famous for migratory birds in the winter & spring months.

The recently opened 9 hole golf course at La Faute sur Mer also includes a 6 hole pitch and putt course, driving range and putting green.

Drive inland to Moutiers les Mauxfaits where you'll find 2 great activity parks less than half an hour away:

- Indian Forest is an adventure park with a wide selection of activities for all ages, as well as a restaurant & bar area

- O'Gliss Water Park is a great day out for all the family, with a separate pool area for the very young


Further afield

The historic port of La Rochelle is just 25 mins south of Saint Michel.

A 45 minute drive will bring you to the award-winning theme park Puy du Fou, an experience not to be missed, though advance booking in the high season is recommended.

Saint Michel is on the edge of the Marais Poitevinoften known as la Venise verte thanks to the many natural waterways, where you can hire a boat or even a canoe to explore the area.
